About Superbloom Pottery

Hello! I'm Rachel, the potter behind Superbloom Pottery. In 2023 I underwent surgery to remove melanoma from my left (dominant!) arm. Between the pain and deformity, I couldn’t imagine using my arm like I had before. Needing something to look forward to during recovery, I decided that I would buy a stand up paddle board and sign up for a 6-week pottery class. Both required me to regain strength and use my arm in fun, new ways.

I didn’t know that that 6-week class would turn into an obsession. I’ve always enjoyed painting and clay has become the perfect canvas for my artistic expression. Through pottery, I am able to paint, carve, and express my love of nature, geometry, and Chicago.

The name Superbloom comes from those rare desert phenomena when conditions align perfectly, causing wildflowers to bloom in extraordinary abundance. For me, pottery is full of superbloom moments. The acts of throwing, trimming, and decorating a pot, seeing pieces for the first time after a glaze firing, and watching someone else admire and appreciate my ceramics each bring abundant delight.
